CLEAN UP EXERCISE CENTRAL MARKET, BWITINGI, BUEA.

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 under the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future”, The Environmental Compendium Association TECA, in partnership with the University of Buea Commonwealth Club UBCWC, conducted a public clean up exercise at Central Market, Bwitingi.
 
1. Objective and Legal Basis
 
The exercise promoted environmental sustainability and proper solid waste management in line with Law No. 96/12 of 5 August 1996 Law on Environmental Management, Art. 9 the right of every citizen to a healthy environment. The goal is to reduce environmental pollution, prevent public health hazards, and raise civic awareness.
 
2. Implementation and Stakeholder Collaboration
 
The participants were deployed to designated zones for collection, raking, and sweeping of waste.
 
Executed with technical and logistical support from HYSACAM and the Buea Municipal Council, which provided PPE, waste bags, bins, and a garbage truck for collection and final disposal. A Council representative was present, reaffirming the Council’s duty of environmental stewardship under decentralization law.
 
3. Key Observation
Notable civic participation Some market vendors joined volunteers onsite.
Plastic waste was the dominant pollutant, underscoring the need for continued extended producer responsibility and public education on responsible waste disposal.
 
4. Outcome
The exercise was successfully completed. It demonstrated the impact of multi stakeholder action in achieving cleaner, safer public spaces.
