WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026 CELEBRATION IN BUEA

Date: June 5, 2026
Location: Buea, South West Region, Cameroon
Project Lead: Barrister Besong Christelle Engowei

Organized in collaboration with: Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED), CSOs, and Community Volunteers

On World Environment Day 2026, we joined the global movement to restore and protect our planet with a full day of action in Buea. From advocacy to action to dialogue, the day brought together government, civil society, students, and community members for one shared goal: a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable South West Region.

World Environment Day remains the largest global platform for environmental action. Our 2026 commemoration was designed to:

  • Raise public awareness on environmental protection and sustainability
  • Promote community participation in climate action
  • Contribute to landscape restoration through tree planting
  • Strengthen collaboration between government, CSOs, and local communities

The day began with an Advocacy Walk through the streets of Buea, alongside the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) and fellow Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Holding placards and chanting for the planet, we sensitized the public on the need to end plastic pollution, protect our forests, and adopt sustainable practices.

Immediately after the walk, we carried out a Tree Planting Exercise at the Government Survey School, Buea. With the support of students, volunteers, and partners, hundreds of seedlings were planted one tree at a time for a greener South West. The exercise was not just about planting, but also educating young people on tree nurturing and environmental stewardship.

Gala Dinner with the Governor. The day culminated in a Gala Dinner with the Governor of the South West Region. The evening provided a platform for high level dialogue, reflection on regional environmental challenges, and renewed commitment from all stakeholders to support sustainable development initiatives.

  • Successful mobilization of over 300 participants including students, volunteers, and CSOs
  • Hundreds of tree seedlings planted to contribute to greening and carbon sequestration efforts
  • Increased public awareness on environmental sustainability along the streets of Buea
  • Strengthened partnership with MINEPDED, the South West Regional Administration, and fellow CSOs

We extend our sincere gratitude to MINEPDED, the Office of the Governor of the South West Region, all participating CSOs, students of Survey School, our dedicated volunteers, and every community member who stood, marched, planted, and celebrated with us.

World Environment Day is not just one day it is a movement. We remain committed to sustaining this momentum through continuous tree planting, clean up campaigns, environmental education in schools, and advocacy for sustainable policies.

The work continues. Let us keep planting, cleaning, educating, and advocating for today, and for generations to come.
