Clean-up of Mutengene Slaughterhouse, Limbe Road
Date: Wednesday, 13th May 2026
Location: Mutengene Slaughterhouse, Limbe Road, Mutengene.
Project Lead: Barrister T. Ndip Reicthman President
As part of our ongoing community public health and CO2 justice interventions, the Environmental Compendium Association successfully carried out a clean up campaign at the Mutengene Slaughterhouse on 13th May 2026. The exercise brought together volunteers dedicated to improving environmental sanitation and public health.
Armed with brooms, shovels, and protective equipment, our team undertook a thorough cleaning of the slaughterhouse facility and its immediate surroundings. Beyond physical cleaning, the Association held a sensitization session with local butchers and operators on sustainable waste disposal methods and good hygiene practices to ensure long-term cleanliness of the facility.
During the exercise, we discovered a critical environmental and public health hazard:
The slaughterhouse is located directly beside
River Benyo. All slaughterhouse waste – including blood, intestinal waste, and bones is deposited directly into the river. The same river flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Most alarmingly, the same contaminated water from River Benyo is used by butchers to wash meat that is sold and consumed by the population of more than 60,000 people living in Mutengene.

This practice poses severe risks of waterborne diseases, cholera, and long-term environmental pollution of our water systems and ocean.
The Environmental Compendium Association will:
- Reported this finding to the Tiko Council.
- Advocate for the construction of a proper waste pit and drainage system at the facility
- Follow up with butchers on the adoption of hygienic waste management
We commend our volunteers for turning green talk into green action. This project demonstrates our commitment to protecting public health and promoting environmental justice at the community level.
